Tiger Woods closes out routine week with strong Sunday at Torrey Pines

Justin Rose of England watches his second shot on the seventh hole of the South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course during the third round of the Far

Spieth also was in range, three shots behind Rose, until his tee shot found the gnarly rough left of the fairway at No. 12 and he was sloppy around the green in making a double bogey.

That dropped his lead to three shots over Adam Scott, who birdied his last hole for a 65.

The 43-year-old golf star was one-over-par through four holes in the first round of the tournament on Thursday.

The smooth-swinging former world No.1, who has previously struggled on the greens, adopted an arm-lock grip several days before the US PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines. I didn't quite make as many putts as I wanted to, but I felt like I was hitting the ball on my line, just not reading them right.

Starting the day seven shots behind, Scott opened with an 8-foot birdie and then holed out from 103 yards for eagle on the next hole.

The score is remarkable given three of the four rounds are played on the South course, which last season ranked eighth-hardest on the PGA Tour. Seven shots adrift of Justin Rose, he has another opportunity to play his way into the mix this weekend as the scene shifts back to the South.

He ended the opening day with a two-under par score on the South Course.

Leader Rose ran in a series of mid-length putts, few better than a 20-footer from the fringe for eagle at the par-five ninth.

Through 63 holes, Tiger Woods looked out of place and out of sorts during his 2019 debut while prowling some of his favorite stomping grounds in the golf world. "He's the No. 1 player in the world, he's played well for over two years". I made par in the playoff, which was great. "But with my expectation levels, and how I know I can perform, I feel like I'm underperforming a little bit".

The following words came from Tiger Woods following his frustrating 2-under-par 70 in Friday's third round of the Farmers Insurance Open: "If I just continue hitting good putts eventually they'll go in in boatloads".

Englishmen Ian Poulter and Paul Waring each shot 64 to tie for third at 16 under with Spaniards Sergio Garcia (66) and Alvaro Quiros (68).

"That's always been the case, but I hadn't played in a tournament since the Tour Championship".

Woods said he "chickened out" with his approach on No. 1 but added, "As I get more comfortable, I'll fire at more flags and start being a little bit more aggressive and start feeling a little bit more comfortable with the game and being back competing again".
