USA moving slowly on Syria troop withdrawal

Trump Goes Wobbly on Threats

President Trump said that the U.S. would continue to protect YPG terrorist in Syria even after they leave the country.

"We're in countries that most people have never even heard about", he said, referring to United States combat deployments, including in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Shanahan, who spoke before Trump's comments on the military, limited his remarks to the Pentagon's cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security on border issues. We have other bases in the general area.

Trump also responded to questions about the United States decision to withdraw from northern Syria.

He declined to be specific about how long troops would remain in Syria. Trump, in his December 19 pullout announcement, cited the same reasons, arguing that troops had no need to stay in the war-torn country.

Meanwhile, a senior Israeli source said after the meeting that Israel got "almost everything it asked for" when Pompeo granted "seven out of eight" requests made Netanyahu during their meeting.

Following the announcement that US Troops would be pulled out of Syria, Turkey planned a military operation against pro-US Kurds.

About 2,000 USA forces and other foreign troops are in Syria to assist local fighters battling IS, the jihadists who once controlled a "caliphate" covering much of Iraq and Syria.

The Syrian regime said Wednesday hundreds of Kurdish fighters had withdrawn from Manbij near the border with Turkey, days after the Kurds appealed to Damascus for support against a threatened Turkish offensive.

However, Mr Trump said he did want to "protect" US-backed Kurdish fighters in the country as Washington draws down its 2,000 troops, which would happen "over a period of time".

It prompted Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to step down, and the US envoy to the coalition fighting Islamic State militants resigned in protest. Garrett Marquis, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, stated, "Ambassador John Bolton will travel to Israel and Turkey in early January to discuss the deliberate and coordinated withdrawal of USA forces from Syria, and increased cooperation with the Turkish military and other partners".

"Now when I start getting out the Fake News Media, or some failed Generals who were unable to do the job before I arrived, like to complain about me & my tactics, which are working", Trump wrote in another post. "Just doing what I said I was going to do!" the president said. Trump went out of his way to explain his continuing commitment to the Kurds.

It is unclear whether the proof of a Kurdish pullout will deter Turkey from launching another military operation in Syria, but the government in Damascus has repeatedly said it views Turkish troops as invaders and will fight them if necessary.
