EU Urges Iran to Refrain From Ballistic Missile Development Activities

Iranian defense officials unveil new cruise missile Hoveyzeh in Tehran

Iran on Saturday unveiled a new cruise missile with range up to 1,350 kilometers (around 840 miles), according to Iran's state television.

"The test of the Hoveizeh cruise missile was carried out successfully at a range of 1,200 km and accurately hit the set target", Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami was quoted as saying by Mehr news agency.

Amirali Hajizadeh, head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace division, said at the event Iran had overcome initial problems in producing jet engines for cruise missiles and could now manufacture a full range of the weapons.

Iran says its missile tests are not in violation of the resolution and denies its missiles are capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

In January, it tried to launch a satellite into space which it said failed.

Iran reined in most of its nuclear program under a landmark 2015 deal with major powers but has kept up development of its ballistic missile technology.

The resolution, which enshrined Iran's nuclear deal, called upon Tehran to refrain for up to eight years from work on ballistic missiles created to deliver nuclear weapons.

Continuing Iranian missile tests have also alarmed the European Union - not to mention countries in the Middle East - and Monday's statement called on Tehran to stop such activities.

The EU warned Tehran over its ballistic missile programme and interference in the Syria conflict Monday, while welcoming a new mechanism to trade with Iran while bypassing USA sanctions. Prior to the announcement of INSTEX, the Iranian hierarchy expressed doubts regarding whether European would deliver on its JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan] pledges and of ease the pain caused by US sanctions.

"If the Europeans and others want to pursue the missile disarmament of the Islamic Republic of Iran based on a conspiracy, we will have no option but to resort to a strategic leap", Salami told Press TV.

Defying threats from Washington, the UK, France and Germany have executed their plan to set up a special-payments mechanism with Iran and skirt USA sanctions.

On Tuesday, Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran's National Security Council, said that terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah were prepared to unleash an "inferno" on the Jewish State.

New U.S. sanctions have largely succeeded in persuading European companies to abandon business with Iran, and Washington said it did not expect the EU effort - known as INSTEX, or Instrument for Supporting Trade Exchanges - to change that.
