LA-bound train passengers stranded for 36 hours in snow in Oregon

Amtrak Train Bound for Klamath Falls Stopped Due to Snow, Debris

An Amtrak train traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles has started moving again after spending 36 hours stranded in the snowy OR mountains with 183 passengers on board.

None of the 183 passengers on board were injured in the incident, Amtrak noted.

Almost 200 people aboard an Amtrak train now have everyone else beat when it comes to tales about travel nightmares.

Train 11, which operates daily between Seattle and Los Angeles, struck the fallen tree around 6:18 p.m. Sunday, Magliari said. As of the morning of February 26, the 183 passengers were still on board, waiting for crews to arrive to get them back on track.

Road closures and fallen trees due to the snow made it impossible to transport the passengers by bus, officials said.

"We have NOT MOVED for 30 straight hours", Dodson wrote on Facebook.

"The train had been inoperable due to weather conditions and downed trees", Mr McMahan told CNN in an email.

The region was hit with a rare heavy snowstorm, where snow accumulations reached about a foot by Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Dodson said Tuesday morning that passengers had been told breakfast would be the last meal available.

"We're running low on supplies", Dodson said in a video recorded Monday night, after the train had been stuck for 24 hours.

A Union Pacific locomotive began towing the train overnight and traveled the 45 miles back to Eugene. By Tuesday morning, at least a foot had accumulated, the weather service said.

She said: "It's just been like a giant kumbaya party".

Naparstek said Amtrak regrets the delay and will refund passengers' ticket costs and provide "other compensation as appropriate".

Dodson said friendships were formed, romances may have bloomed and passengers had heat, power, phones and laptops on the train, but still, "it was weird to be stuck in a place for so many days and not be able to leave, go outside and get fresh air".

The Coast Starlight Train 11 is now near the town of Oakridge - a small town that has become further isolated by the wintry conditions, with snow blocking roads and causing the town to lose power.

She said the passengers include families with children and a few dozen college students - including about 20 students from Japan.

Passenger Carly Bigby told CTV News Channel that she was on her way to Klamath Falls, Ore., where she works as a teacher, when the train abruptly came to a halt.

"A lot of the [older] kids have been really good but they're having to run up and down and it's a lot".
