Labour to back second referendum to prevent ‘damaging Tory Brexit’

Philippe Lamberts, an influential member of the European Parliament's Brexit steering group, said a British request for an extension must be accompanied by "a credible plan for holding a people's vote on the final deal that includes an option to remain" in the EU.

She has faced a buzz saw of opposition from Brexit moderates and hardliners in her own Conservative Party.

"There may be further gains for the pound because this increases the likelihood of May's Brexit deal being accepted by pro-Brexit politicians who want to avoid delaying the process".

British Prime Minister Theresa May at the EU-Arab League summit on Monday.

The economic and trade analysis comes just hours after May announced the option of delaying Brexit if United Kingdom lawmakers rejected her Brexit deal and rejected the option of a no-deal Brexit.

Such an extension would first require MPs to vote to reject both the prime minister's current deal and a no-deal scenario.

Mr Corbyn confirmed that Labour will table an amendment to the government's motion calling for a deal based on its priorities of a customs union, close alignment with the single market and matching EU workplace and environmental rights.

Voters narrowly approved the June 2016 referendum to pull Britain out of the EU.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he had "lost count" of the Prime Minister's explanations for her "grotesquely reckless" delays.

The party will seek to enshrine Labour's five Brexit demands in law by tabling an amendment to the Government's Brexit motion which is set to be debated on Wednesday.

The change in approach follows the resignations of eight Labour lawmakers last week, partly over the party's failure to back another Brexit referendum.

The move is likely to cheer many Labour Party members, who have backed calls for a so-called "people's vote".

The Labour Party had been ambivalent in its support of another public vote on Brexit, in fear of alienating its minority leave-voting constituencies.

Today, May bowed to pressure from a trio of Cabinet ministers who reportedly threatened to resign if she did not give Parliament the chance to delay Brexit if her deal failed to win approval again.

But EU leaders insist that the legally binding Brexit withdrawal agreement, which took a year and a half to negotiate, can't be reopened.

After the British Parliament voted 432-202 against her divorce deal in January, the worst defeat for a government in modern British history, May has tried to use the threat of a potentially disorderly no-deal Brexit to get concessions out of the EU.

Mrs May has said a new vote on any revised Brexit deal won't be held this week and could come as late as March 12.

May sparked outrage at home when she suggested Sunday that parliament may not be able to vote on her Brexit deal until March 12, just 17 days before Britain leaves the EU.

"I don't see how businesses can plan".

"I have one midwife for the entirety of my constituency now".

Any British request for an extension would require unanimous approval by European Union member states.

"I believe that if we have to, we will ultimately make a success of no-deal", May told the MPs, to a chorus of hoots and boos.

Tusk said he told May that "no matter which scenario, all 27 (EU countries) will show maximum understanding and goodwill".

Ireland, the European home of tech giants like Facebook and Google, insists large digital firms should be taxed via a broader global deal at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

"It is within our grasp to leave with a deal on 29th of March and I think that that is where all of our energies should be focused", May said.

May returned on Monday night from an European Union summit in Egypt where one European Union leader after another asked her whether she would delay Brexit.

Since lawmakers overwhelmingly rejected her withdrawal deal last month, the Conservative prime minister has sought to address their concerns about the text´s "backstop" arrangement.
