Next stop on Saudi crown prince's image makeover tour: China

Gokul Gopalakrishnan weighs in on Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's India visit after he announced an investment of $20 billion in Pakistan. Salman said his country saw investment opportunities "in various fields (in India) to exceed $100 billion".

Saudi officials have commenced the implementation of their side of the deal between Khan and MbS to release and repatriate more than 2,000 Pakistani citizens jailed in the Kingdom over common or petty crimes.

The investments could help Saudi Arabia regain its place as the top oil exporter to China, which it has relinquished to Russian Federation for the past three years. A former diplomat tweeted disappointment that Modi would meet at all with Mohammed, whom he called "princeling with a murder taint" - a reference to intelligence assessments that the Saudi leader was behind the killing of Khashoggi. This comes hours after France chose to move a resolution at the United Nations to list the Jaish Chief as a "global terrorist".

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang said the two-day visit of Muhammad Bin Salman to Beijing would seek to promote the greater development of Sino-Saudi relations and deepen cooperation on China's ambitious Belt and Road global trade infrastructure initiative.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman was gifted a gold-plated submachine gun by Pakistani senators during his visit to Islamabad on Sunday, The Guardian reported.

Prince Mohammed, who arrived in the capital on Tuesday for his two-day first state visit to India, was earlier in the day accorded a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Two days after a Saudi-Pakistan joint statement issued during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's visit to Islamabad opposed "politicisation" of the United Nations listing regime, al-Jubeir clarified to the Indian media this wasn't a reference to efforts to sanction Azhar through the UN's 1267 Committee.

His visit follows trips to India and Pakistan, which send millions of labourers to Saudi Arabia and are seeking closer economic ties.

In an interview with India's NDTV, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir lauded Pakistan's efforts in the war against terror and said Islamabad had lost thousands of soldiers and civilians in the fight against terrorist outfits in the tribal areas.

Data show the number of homegrown militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir is growing, and may be at its highest level in a decade. Battling a decades-long separatist insurgency, India has deployed tens of thousands of troops in its portion of Kashmir.

In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted MBS at the airport, with his signature yet ill-timed and thoroughly avoidable hug to welcome him as Saudi-India bilateral trajectories catch steam over the past few years.

India may be no exception.
