Teaser image] Huawei will launch its foldable-screen 5G smartphone at MWC

Samsung's take on the gaming smartphone is bold and peculiar at the same time

Its new flagship Galaxy series will be unveiled next month, but no date has been set for the launch of the foldable device. Huawei had earlier confirmed that the company was working on a foldable 5G smartphone, and soon after, announced it would be launched at MWC 2019.

While it looks cool, the shape of the hinge may augur that it won't fold flat. Ironically, we now know that after a period of years of development, there will not even be a week between the introduction of Samsung's and Huawei's foldable phone. While Samsung and another Chinese phone-maker, Royole, have the screen fold in half like a book, Xiaomi chose to add a second fold.

Beyond confirming its existence, Huawei hasn't revealed much else about its debut, ugh, "foldable".

Along with this stunning screen, fans could also be treated to a new triple rear camera, faster processor and the ability to refill other phones via reverse wireless charging technology.

As of now, the Huawei foldable phone has no official name. The 5G foldable smartphone is expected to come equipped with the in-house HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC and the Balong 5000 modem.

The render, via 91mobiles, shows the sports-orientated smartwatch would not feature Samsung's much-loved rotating bezel, dropping this in favour of two simple buttons. This was the first Samsung smartphone to offer such a display. "It is conceivable that a display can be folded out".

Huawei has scheduled a press conference on Sunday 24 February at 14:00 CET. Speaking of Samsung, while its own original folding phone is still not more publicized, the only competition Xiaomi has on the foldable screen frenzy is Royole and its FlexPai phone-tablet. The teaser image revealed the display will indeed be on the outside.

The invite didn't disclose any information about the upcoming smartphone.

Uncertainties over U.S. -China trade tensions and China's sluggish economy bode ill for global electronics makers in 2019, pressuring demand for memory chips, smartphones and display panels, analysts say.
