Huawei's reputation receives another damaging blow from United Kingdom security report

Huawei poses national security risks, says UK watchdog

The report also noted that now the same Huawei hardware may use different software builds in different parts of a network, which means that the builds may operate on different levels of security.

Huawei is now the global market leader in telecoms equipment sales, but faces resistance from countries across Europe, North America and Australasia, many whom have accused the telecoms firm's 5G mobile infrastructure of posing security risks.

But while the report was damning of Huawei, saying it found additional "significant technical issues in Huawei's engineering processes leading to new risks in the United Kingdom telecommunications networks", the board stopped short of calling for a ban on Huawei's involvement in 5G in the UK.

The board, which is led by a cybersecurity official from top British spy agency, GCHQ, and includes among its members a senior executive from Huawei, said it could provide "only limited assurance" that the long-term security risks of Huawei equipment could be managed.

This verdict is a further blow for a...

It has stepped up the campaign in recent months after Meng Wanzhou, Huawei CFO and Ren's daughter, was arrested in Canada in December at US behest on charges of bank and wire fraud in violation of USA sanctions against Iran.

The report comes at a times when the preparing to roll out 5G mobile networks.

It is also a crucial issue for local providers Spark New Zealand and TwoDegrees Mobile, both of which use Huawei equipment in the current, 4G mobile network.

It also claimed it had not confidence in Huawei's ability to resolve "underlying defects".

Huawei last year committed to spend $2 billion (€1.8 billion) to address problems previously identified by the board, but has also cautioned that could take up to five years to implement.

China's Huawei Technologies called on Washington to drop the "loser's attitude" and once again rubbished USA allegations its gear could be used by Beijing for spying, as its network business weakened amid mounting global scrutiny.

Japan revised its procurement rules past year, introducing measures to strengthen security that were also a de facto ban on government purchases from Huawei and ZTE.

Huawei has secured over 30 commercial 5G contracts with global telecoms operators up to the end of February 2019, with more than 40,000 5G base stations being shipped to all over the world. In spite of the latest discoveries, the European Union still has not committed to banning Huawei's hardware from 5G networks.

"The arrest of a Huawei employee will not affect Polish-Chinese economic relations, because the economy does not get offended", Koscinski said.

Those problems revealed "serious and systematic defects in Huawei's software engineering and cyber security competence".

So far, both the USA and Australia have banned Huawei from its networks, with the U.S. pressuring European allies to follow suit.

Huawei hit back at Washington earlier this month by suing the United States over a law barring U.S. government agencies from engaging with Huawei or with third parties that use the company's products, which has crippled Huawei in that lucrative market.

"I hope the USA can adjust its attitude", Guo said at a press briefing that was attended by more than 100 journalists from across the world.
