Philip Hammond urges colleagues to 'think carefully' on Brexit deal

Brexiteers outline EU deal terms

Brexit negotiations between Britain with the European Union will continue through the weekend, the country's chief law officer said Thursday as the United Kingdom scrambled to secure changes to the divorce deal before a vote in Parliament next week. "I think it is so important that there is a people's vote in the same way there was for the Good Friday Agreement which was negotiated and then sent to the people to see if they agreed with that".

The European Commission said on Wednesday that "no solution has been identified" to the Irish backstop and it has refused to rewrite the withdrawal deal already struck, which is created to ensure an orderly Brexit on 29 March and pave the way for trade talks.

"In the coming two years we have other things to tackle than continue with the uncertainty of the Brexit process", Verhofstadt told a parliamentary commission. "This is now the last chance to be confident that we can get this deal done and we can leave the European Union on schedule".

The British minister said, however, that she hoped the contingency measures would never be needed as the efforts remain focused on securing a deal from the EU.

However, with the details not finalised, Fox said there was no agreement on whether to tell parliament before it must decide on March 12 whether to accept an unpopular exit agreement negotiated with the European Union by Prime Minister Theresa May. It is in the European interest for the United Kingdom to leave with a deal.

Mr Sterling said: "The consequences of material business failure as a result of a "no-deal" exit, combined with changes to everyday life and potential border frictions could well have a profound and long-lasting impact on society".

MPs will vote on Tuesday on whether to back the Withdrawal Agreement as Mrs May seeks further concessions on the Northern Ireland backstop in order to reverse the humiliating 230-vote defeat suffered the last time the Commons passed judgment on her Brexit deal.

"These discussions are running, they're going to be resuming very shortly, they're going to be continuing nearly certainly throughout the weekend", Attorney General Geoffrey Cox, who is leading the talks, told British MPs.

Questioned by the cross-party committee about the reports, Dr Fox said that he personally felt it would be "beneficial" for proposed tariff rates to be published before the Commons vote on no-deal expected next Wednesday.

Cox rejected criticism that Britain had not presented viable plans to the European Union, telling MPs the proposals were "detailed, coherent, careful" and "as clear as day". Any extension to the Article 50 process, under which the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union on 29 March, would need the unanimous approval of the EU.

Dr Fox played down the significance of negotiating objectives published by the U.S. for a future trade deal with Britain.
