Schmear campaign: New Yorkers lambaste bread-sliced bagel

AlekKrautmann on Twitter

"It was a hit!", tweeted Alek Krautmann, along with a picture most likely to be offered as "exhibit A".

Whatever your filling of choice, you slice it horizontally - with the centre hole in tact and two equally-thick halves - because you're a smart person (although admittedly not as smart as the guy who has a mathematic formula for cutting bagels).

New York City's 311 service tweeted out "real New Yorkers know there is only one way to slice a bagel".

Even NYPD Chief Dermot Shea responded on Twitter, joking the act was crime and saying it would never happen in New York City.

However, there were a number of people defending the alternative way to slice the baked good.

But their unique way of slicing bagels isn't St. Louis' only questionable practice. The Democrat tweeted, "St Louis, fuhgeddaboudit".

On Wednesday evening, Panera, the company responsible for the bread-sliced bagels in the initial photo, summed it up nicely.

Jordan Peele only just released Us on Friday, but the horror that everyone on the internet is talking about right now is ... this image of sliced bagels.

Meanwhile, some Twitter users had fun with the controversy and began satirically posting other "St. Louis style" food trends.

How do you eat your bagel?
