Trump campaign ex-chief Manafort to be sentenced later Thursday

In arguing for a reduced sentence, they repeatedly mentioned that there was no evidence of collusion, while citing various factors like health concerns, acceptance of responsibility, numerous testimonials to character, and a slew of other bank/tax fraud cases where defendants received a significantly lighter sentence than the one Mueller proposed. It was not related to Manafort's role in Donald Trump's presidential campaign.

Seth Waxman, a former federal prosecutor and solicitor general, said he was surprised by Ellis' verdict, but that he also anticipates that Manafort will serve more than four years once Berman Jackson issues her sentence.

Prosecutors say Manafort failed to pay more than $6m (£4.6m) in taxes, as he funded his opulent lifestyle, including a $15,000 ostrich-skin jacket and a luxury renovation of his Hamptons mansion.

Manafort has another trial next week with a different federal judge, to receive sentencing for two crimes he pleaded guilty to over the summer: witness tampering and conspiracy related to his illegal Ukrainian income. In his filing, Manafort emphasized he had spoken freely to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2014 about his work for Russia-backed Ukrainian politicians.

"The last two years have been the most hard years for my family and I", Manafort told U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis. Nevertheless, Ellis said that aside from his crimes, Manafort has led an "otherwise blameless life" and that he had a good relationship with others.

In response to Mueller's memo, Manafort's defense attorneys in the Virginia case asked Ellis for leniency.

Prosecutors asked for a "substantial" prison term, but in handing down the sentence Ellis said the sentencing guidelines of up to 24 years were "excessive".

What won't emerge in the sentencing hearing are Special Counsel Robert Mueller's conclusions about whether Manafort conspired with Russians who interfered in the 2016 election.

Government lawyers countered that Manafort's millions were built on a criminal enterprise in which he hid tens of millions of dollars in foreign income and failed to pay more than $6 million U.S. in taxes. If not, Waxman said, then today's verdict is "definitely a victory for Paul Manafort and for President Trump".

Following the sentencing, Manafort's lawyer, Kevin Downing, told reporters his client's conviction and sentencing had nothing to do with allegations of Russian collusion by the Trump campaign.

Mueller's team issued a scathing rebuttal, stating that Manafort had breached a plea agreement reached with the government and lied repeatedly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's office. It was a far cry from Manafort's usual dapper appearance and stylish garb.

However, the government can not "be sure of the full extent of Manafort's assets", because he never submitted a financial statement to any court, which prosecutors pointed out is "yet another example that he has failed to accept responsibility". "I know it is my conduct that has brought me here", he said.

Manafort, in addition to Trump's campaign, worked on the White House bids of Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush and Bob Dole.

Manafort did not testify in his own defense at his trial, which revealed a life of excess, even among high-rolling Washington lobbyists.
