British MPs reject all Brexit alternatives, again

'Very Grave': Theresa May's Brexit Deal Fails For the Third Time

After the UK Parliament once againrejected alternative options to Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal, European politicians were quick to react.

Parliament's lower House of Commons seized the initiative last week by holding the first round of votes on eight alternative Brexit options but failed to find a majority on any of them.

Fifteen Conservative MPs and 203 from Labour - including Mr Corbyn - were among the 280 who voted in favour of a confirmatory referendum for any Brexit deal agreed in the Commons, but they were outnumbered by the 292 voting against, who included 24 Labour MPs.

MPs also voted 273 to 276 to reject the proposal to negotiate permanent customs union with the EU.

The minister said if parliament were to back an agreement later this week, it would be possible to avoid European Parliament elections next month, which many pro-Brexit Tories would regard as a betrayal of the 2016 referendum result.

Brexit minister Steven Barclay said after the results were announced that the default position was still that Britain would leave the European Union on April 12 without a divorce deal - the nightmare scenario for many global businesses.

Barclay pointed out that the alternative to a no-deal exit on April 12 would be a long extension that would mean having to hold European Parliament elections.

Drax said Theresa May must resign if she can not deliver Brexit, and said he should have trusted his instincts "and those of the British people" when he voted on the withdrawal agreement.

Conservative MP Nick Boles resigned the Conservative whip after the votes, claiming the party "refused to compromise".

"I have given everything to an attempt to find a compromise", an emotional Boles told parliament.

He added: "If it is good enough for the prime minister to have three chances at her deal, then I suggest it's possible the House should have a chance to consider again the options we had before us.so the House can succeed where the prime minister has failed - in presenting a credible economic relationship with Europe for the future that prevents us crashing out with no deal".

And a motion aiming to prevent the United Kingdom leaving without a deal, including a vote of whether to revoke article 50, lost by 191 to 292 votes.

Some aides believe that a vote for the customs union could boost support for the deal among Conservative MPs who are desperate to avoid a softer Brexit. As things stand, Britain will now depart at 2200 GMT on April 12 - unless May comes up with another option.

Following the announcement of Monday's votes, Clarke urged MPs from opposition parties to abandon their campaign for a second referendum, describing his proposal as the only way which could command a sizable majority.

MPs have control of proceedings in the Commons for a third time on Wednesday, but Speaker John Bercow said it was not yet clear what debates and votes will be staged.

Following the result, Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the European Parliament's Brexit committee, said: "A hard Brexit becomes almost inevitable".

Addressing the House of Commons, Drax said: "I made the wrong call on Friday".
