Eight measles cases reported in New York's Westchester County

Jewish children get off a Yeshiva school bus in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday.

Yet here we are in 2019, with measles outbreaks occurring in six states, a measles state of emergency declared in Rockland County, and the World Health Organization announcing that the virus is once again a global threat.

The city's health department is doubling down on its earlier order that yeshivas and daycare programs in Williamsburg be sanctioned if they failed to exclude unvaccinated students. Westchester's health commissioner says two had to be hospitalized. It says the vaccine is 97% effective.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that causes fever, rash, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Those personal rights, however, at some point in time cross over and impact the rights of others.

As The Washington Post has previously reported, public health experts link the surge to pockets of unvaccinated children nationwide, populations deemed vulnerable in large part because their parents have hesitated or refused to get them immunized.

The state of emergency banned anyone who is under 18 years of age and unvaccinated against the measles from public places in Rockland County.

Some 285 measles cases have been identified in New York City since last fall, compared to two in all of 2017.

"This is the epicenter of a measles outbreak that is very, very troubling and must be dealt with immediately", de Blasio said at a news conference.

Public health officials insist otherwise.

Under the mandatory vaccinations, members of the City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will check the vaccination records of any individual who may have been in contact with infected patients.

"These are skills that we practice every day", Palacio said. People can spread measles before they even know they are sick. They should not go to a health care facility unannounced to avoid spreading measles to others. "They have experience gaining people's trust". "We have to protect our kids and our families", de Blasio said.

Let's also not forget the other life-saving vaccines that protect us against such potentially deadly diseases as polio, hepatitis B, pneumococcal pneumonia, the flu, Haemophilus influenza type B, and HPV, which can cause cervical and throat cancers.

The city believes an estimated 1,800 children in Williamsburg were not immunized as of December. Citizens have been ordered to get vaccinated against Measles with immediate effect, and the failure to follow the orders will result in a $1000 fine.

The city has ceaselessly worked over the past year to raise awareness about Measles vaccinations. The ultra-Orthodox communities of the county are the most affected by the measles outbreak according to the New York Times.

"There is an element of anti-vaccine supporters and sympathizers who do not want to get shots".

Immunizations have been such a resounding public health success that most Americans have never seen a child with measles, mumps, diphtheria or numerous other diseases that once killed or maimed thousands every year. "You have a larger pool of babies". In response, anti-vaccination protesters have begun wearing yellow stars, claiming that rules based on vaccination status are analogous to the inhumane treatment of Jews during the Holocaust.
