Jamal Khashoggi: Saudis paid Khashoggi's children, claims report

The children of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi have received million-dollar houses in the kingdom and monthly five-figure payments as compensation for the killing of their father, according to current and former Saudi officials as well as people close to the family.

Of course, the Saudis tried their best to hide their tracks, repeatedly lying about Khashoggi's whereabouts, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman front and centre of the cover-up.

King Salman reportedly approved the compensation to the Khashoggi siblings late a year ago in what a former official described as an attempt "to make a wrong right" in the aftermath of "a big injustice", according to the Post.

The houses given to the Khashoggi children are located in the city of Jeddah, in a compound where their eldest brother Salah lives.

Three of Khashoggi's children live in the US and are expected to sell their properties, which are in Jeddah.

It should also be noted that the prosecutors are seeking the death penalty of five of the 11 operatives that were involved in the killing of the journalist at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday, October 2.

"Six months after the extrajudicial execution of Jamal Khashoggi, there are still no real signs of justice or worldwide accountability". Mr Khashoggi was reportedly strangled moments after entering the building, though the details of what happened to him remains clouded in doubt amid numerous claims, counter-claims and denials from Saudi authorities, including the whereabouts of his body.

The kingdom is trying to come to a long-term understanding with the Khashoggi family members to encourage them to continue to refrain from criticism in relation to their father's killing by Saudi agents, the paper reported on Monday.

Amid global fallout from the death, Saudi Arabia released a picture of Bin Salman shaking hands with Salah in an attempt at reconciliation.

The family could also receive tens of millions of dollars in "blood money" payments following the trial of Khashoggi's alleged killers in Riyadh.

The Trump administration, which has fostered close ties with Crown Prince Salman, has declined to accept the USA intelligence community's assessment and refused to implicate Salman directly in the murder, drawing sharp rebukes from Congress.

The official said it was an effort by the royal family "to make a wrong right".

The Washington Post reported that the issue of how far to go in protecting their father's legacy has been a source of tension among the Khashoggi siblings, according to people close to the family. Saudi authorities vehemently deny his involvement. While his daughters have been outspoken about their father, his sons have remained focused on receiving the maximum financial compensation from the crown prince.
