Justice Dept. to release two versions of redacted Mueller report

Former FBI Director Robert S. Mueller

About 6 in 10 continue to believe the president obstructed justice.

A redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's report into Russian meddling in the US election will be released on April 18, 2019, the Justice Department said as President Trump again lashed out at the most politically explosive probe in modern USA history.

Since the special counsel's office closed its investigation late last month, Barr and his team at the Justice Department have been reviewing the almost 400-page final report to determine how much of it can be made public. "M$3 embers of Mueller's team have complained to close associates that the evidence they gathered on obstruction was alarming and significant", the Washington Post reported.

"It's a total phony", Trump said of all allegations to Minneapolis TV station KSTP this week.

"To deny the Judiciary Committee and the Congress the knowledge of what's in parts of the Mueller report is not proper", Nadler said. "There was no obstruction, because that was ruled by the attorney general".

But many Americans still have questions.

Experts say men who self-identify as political independents will be key in the 2020 race.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused the attorney general last week of "going off the rails".

"Now that the Special Counsel's investigation has concluded, we are unaware of any legitimate basis upon which the Department can refuse to answer the Judiciary Committee's inquiries", Graham, Johnson and Grassley - who chair the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee and Senate Finance Committee, respectively - wrote in their letter to Barr.

Mr. Trump, meanwhile, is trying to keep the public focused on Mr. Mueller's bigger conclusion that there was no criminal conspiracy with Russian Federation - undercutting the narrative that launched the lengthy investigation.

Still, the poll suggests Barr's summary helped allay some lingering doubts within the GOP.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., has refrained from issuing subpoenas for Mueller's full report covering his probe examining allegations of whether Trump's campaign conspired with Russian Federation during the 2016 election cycle or the president illegally obstructed the inquiry, as well as for the testimony of individuals questioned during the special counsel's investigation until Barr releases the report Thursday.

"He is the attorney general of the United States, not the attorney general of Donald Trump", Pelosi said April 11. "We've got a lot more important things to worry about".

The victory lap was deliberately premature, they said. Among Democrats, about 70% are at least moderately confident, down slightly from a month ago, and 45% are very or extremely confident.

Trump tweeted that Mueller's report "was written by 18 Angry Democrats who also happen to be Trump Haters (and Clinton Supporters), should have focused on the people who SPIED on my 2016 Campaign, and others who fabricated the whole Russia Hoax". The House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jerrold Nadler of NY, is poised to try to compel Barr to turn over an unredacted copy as well as the report's underlying investigative files. (187 on Twitter.) He is clearly not a fan of the Mueller investigation.

The president is also expected to travel to Mar-a-Lago for the Easter weekend on Thursday, sources say, and depending on what's revealed, Trump could speak to reporters as he leaves the White House.

"We don't even know what we found yet in the probe". Would he have rathered the issue go to Congress for further investigation?

Justice Department officials have had numerous conversations with White House lawyers about the conclusions made by Mr. Mueller, the special counsel, in recent days, according to people with knowledge of the discussions. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has downplayed the likelihood of impeachment proceedings but isn't closing the door entirely if there are significant findings of Trump misconduct. "As far as obstruction of justice, I think probably there'll be elements in there". Respondents were first selected randomly using address-based sampling methods, and later interviewed online or by phone.
