Labour's Corbyn says Theresa May has not moved enough on Brexit

Jeremy Corbyn

The bill requires May to get parliament's approval for the detail of any delay and allows lawmakers to propose a different length of extension.

In an interview with ITV's Peston, he said he was expecting Brussels to insist on a lengthy delay to Brexit but stressed that the Government wanted to ensure that any extension to the Article 50 process could be cut short if a deal was agreed by MPs.

In response to the vote in the House of Commons, the government said it would be a "severe constraint" on its ability to negotiate an extension. Its passage through the House of Lords on Thursday - where there is a clear pro-EU majority - is likely to be less fraught than in the Commons, where Brexiteers reacted with anger at its narrow passage.

Prime Minister Theresa May will meet today with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to discuss Brexit and see if the two sides can reach an agreement. He himself has said such a vote should be restricted to specific circumstances.

The prime minister did not meet the Westminster leaders of other parties.

May, who has already delayed Brexit once, is now trying to find a way to get a divorce deal approved by courting opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn who wants to agree a much closer post-Brexit economic relationship with the EU.

"However, with some colleagues unwilling to support the government in the division lobbies, this is the only way to deliver the smooth, orderly Brexit that we promised and for which the British people voted".

The issue of a second public vote rose to the surface after a Labour spokesman said the party would only back such a move to avoid a "Tory Brexit" or no deal.

During this extension, May would seek to pass the necessary legislation before May 23, so Britain doesn't need to take part in European parliamentary elections.

May's overture to Corbyn, whose party has 245 out of 650 lawmakers, offers a possible way for her to secure a majority for an exit deal as she seeks a second short delay to Brexit.

After U.K. lawmakers three times rejected May's agreement with the bloc that was struck late previous year, the European Union gave Britain until April 12 to approve a withdrawal plan, change course and seek a further delay to Brexit, or crash out of the European Union with no deal to cushion the shock.

The borough's MPs voted along party lines on Brexit during a day of nail-biting political drama in the House of Commons.

In a last gamble, May announced she would bring Corbyn into talks to try to find a way to break the deadlock in parliament, which has voted against leaving the bloc without an agreement.

But if they can not reach a consensus, she has pledged to allow MPs to vote on a number of options, including the deal she has negotiated with the European Union, which has already been rejected twice by MPs.

Arriving for the talks, Mr Starmer confirmed that a "confirmatory" referendum was among the ideas on the table for discussion.

Scotland's Brexit Secretary has insisted holding European elections is essential for the United Kingdom, as he warned staging a second referendum could take up to eight months to organise.

She added that she believes Mrs May is dedicated to leaving the European Union with a deal, but she is unsure how she will proceed as Westminster remains deadlocked.

The meeting sparked fury among some Conservatives, with two ministers quitting Mrs May's Government and a string of backbenchers directly challenging Mrs May during Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons.
