Trump seen leaning hard on new Homeland Security chief over border

President Trump announced the departure of his homeland security secretary last night after months of arguments about how to fortify the southern border. Trump added U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan would replace Nielsen on an interim basis.

On Sunday, he said McAleenan's appointment as acting secretary was "deeply disturbing". But it was later announced she would stay on the job until Wednesday. She announced on her Twitter account: "To the fearless and dedicated men and women of the DHS [Department of Homeland Security], I submitted my resignation to the President this evening".

Writing for the Daily Beast, reporter Asawin Suebsaeng revealed on Monday that two "knowledgeable sources" say that the ongoing combat between Nielsen and Miller was so intense that they "could barely be in the same room without making other top officials uncomfortable".

Tensions between the White House and Nielsen have persisted nearly from the moment she became secretary, after her predecessor, Kelly, became the White House chief of staff in 2017.

Nielsen's relationship with the president had always been said to be hard.

Nielsen's successor deserves more support from Congress as well as the White House than she received, but it won't hurt to have someone in the job who is perceived as tougher by observers on both sides of the border.

Colorado-born Ms Nielsen has also overseen the huge swell in migrants trying to cross the border into America. He is said to be liked by congressional leaders, the administration and Homeland Security officials.

"[Nielsen] held one of the most hard posts in the USA government at one of the most hard times for the issues DHS faces and worked for a very hard boss", said Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond. That could prove a problem during his interactions with Trump, who has moved in recent days to turn off the American aid spigot to those countries over frustrations that their governments are doing too little to prevent their citizens from fleeing north.

Border Patrol said it only used the chemical agent after several of its agents were hit by projectiles, though the agency's commissioner admitted that the patrollers were "wearing protective gear and did not suffer serious injuries".

These include the US administration's much-criticised 2018 policy separating parents and children at the US-Mexico border. "She had a background in cybersecurity".

"I could not be prouder of and more humbled by their service, dedication, and commitment to keep our country safe from all threats and hazards", she said.

U.S. immigration law is a balance between the desire to minimize unauthorized entry into the United States and the desire to protect vulnerable people who may be fleeing harm and persecution. "And it, frankly, has to raise the question for anyone who's offered a Cabinet opportunity [from] President Trump, whether their reputation will survive".
